They have complex social dynamics and live in groups led by a matriarch. It has been observed that they grieve for their dead, cover them with leaves and return to visit them later.

The elephant’s closest relatives are the sea cows and hyraxes. But while they have simple brains, elephants are different. They exhibit many human-like behaviors including self awareness, tool use and complex social structure.

Because of their immense size, elephants are difficult to study. But we know enough to conclude that they have a high degree of intelligence and deserve our respect.
